A scale drawing is an enlarged or reduced drawing of an object that is proportional to the actual object.

A scale is the ratio that compares a length in a scale drawing to the corresponding length in the actual object.

Scaling up from inches to feet.

A 1 in.-long scale drawing is made of a 15 ft boat. The scale can be written as:

(1 in.)/(15 ft.)

You can use a scale to find an actual distance given a scale drawing. You can also use a scale to make a scale drawing given an actual distance.

Consider the scale 1 in. = 15 ft. You can write two different ratios.

(15 ft)/(1 in.)
