Example Using Scale Drawings

The blueprint is a scale drawing of an apartment. Could a bed 6 ft and 3 ft wide fit into the narrow section of the bedroom shown below the bathroom on the blueprint? How do you know?

A floor plan with scale 1 in. : 10 ft. The narrow part of the bedroom is ¾ in. long and ½ in. wide.

Solution

On the blueprint the narrow part of the bedroom is 1 half in. wide and 3 fourths in. long. Use the scale 1 in. : 10 ft to find the actual length and width of the narrow part of the bedroom.

Step 1 Write the scale as fraction 10 ft , over 1 in . end fraction

Step 2 Find the actual length and width of the narrow part of the bedroom.

Multiply the length and width on the drawing by the scale.

Step 3 Compare the actual length and width with the size of the bed. The bed is 6 ft long and 3 ft wide. The narrow part of the bedroom is 7 , and 1 half , ft long and 5 ft wide.
