Using Addition To find a total given a percent, use the percent equation to find the part. Then add the part to the whole.

Sales tax on an item is a percent of the item's price. Find the total price by adding the sales tax to the item's price.

Using Subtraction To find a remainder given a percent, use the percent equation to find the part. Then subtract the part from the whole.

Some companies give salespeople a commission, or a percentage of the selling price of each item they sell. Find the amount of money the company earns on the item by subtracting the commission from the selling price.
