Example Expressing a Fee as a Percent Rate

You bought two tickets to a stock car race. Each ticket cost $17.25. You paid a total of $38.50 including an online service fee. Express the fee as a fixed charge per ticket and as a percent rate to the nearest whole percent.

Solution

Step 1 Find the fee as a fixed charge per ticket.

The cost of two tickets is:

17.25 ยท 2 = 34.50

The fee for two tickets is:

Step 2 Find the fee as a percent rate.

Solving for fee rate.

The fee as a fixed charge is $2.00 per ticket. The fee as a percent rate is about 12% of the ticket cost.
