1-7: Additional Problem Solving

Part 1

Example Modeling with Rational Numbers on Number Lines

Three friends all live on the same street that runs west to east. Juan lives 2 , and 1 half blocks from Amy. Michele lives 3 , and 3 fourths blocks from Juan.

On the number line, show all possible locations for Juan's house and Michele's house on the diagram. Label each point with its coordinate.

A number line with Amy's house at 0. Each integer on the number line shows a house.

Solution

Juan could live 2 , and 1 half blocks east of Amy, or 2 , and 1 half blocks west.

Michele could live 3 , and 3 fourths blocks east of Juan, or 3 , and 3 fourths blocks west.

Number line

So, there are two possible locations for Juan's house and four possible locations for Michele's house.

Juan could live at 2 , and 1 half and then Michele can live at 6 , and 1 fourth or negative 1 , and 1 fourth , .

Or, Juan can live at negative 2 , and 1 half and then Michele can live at 1 , and 1 fourth or negative 6 , and 1 fourth , .
