1-2: Adding Rational Numbers

Part 1

Intro

You can use properties of addition to simplify a sum of rational numbers with different signs.

For example, simplify − 7 + 4.

A group of 7 negative integer chips and a group of 4 positive integer chips.

Rewrite −7 as −3+(−4). − 7 + 4 = − 3 + (− 4) + 4

A group of 3 negative integer chips, a group of 4 negative integer chips, and a group of 4 positive integer chips.

Use the Associative Property of Addition.

= − 3 + (− 4 + 4)

Integer chips

Use the Inverse Property of Addition.

= − 3 + 0
