2-6: Linear Equations: y = mx + b

Part 1

Example Writing Equations to Model Real-World Situations

You are gathering pledges for a charity walk-a-thon. You have pledges from three people. One person pledges $15. The second person pledges $4 for each mile you walk. The third person pledges $5 for each mile you walk. Complete the table. Use the table to write an equation that models the total amount, in dollars, you raise y for walking x miles.

Solution

Table row 5: 15 + 4x + 5x = 15 + 9x.

An equation that models the total amount, in dollars, you raise y for walking x miles is y = 9x + 15.
