11-3: Investigating Patterns – Association

Key Concept

Graphs of real-life data rarely fall in straight lines. However, their arrangement may suggest associations or trends.

Positive Association As one set of values increases, the other set tends to increase as well.

A scatter plot with points scattered in an oval shape that distinctly trends up from left to right.

Negative Association As one set of values increases, the other set tends to decrease.

A scatter plot with points scattered in an oval shape that distinctly trends down from left to right.

No Association There is no apparent relationship among the data.

A scatter plot with points scattered in a circular shape without a distinct trend.
